Later Synagogue

Later Synagogue

A view looking southeast over the remains of the 5th-8th century synagogue that was built directly over the synagogue with the mosaic floor.

In the foreground is the courtyard of this later synagogue.  Visible are two of the three doorways that led into the synagogue proper—most of them excavated away.

Just above the center of the image is the southern apse (Bema) of this synagogue.  It has three steps leading up to the apse.  This is where there was an "ark" in which the Torah scrolls were kept.
