Column Drum

Column Drum

Image of a column drum, a number of which would have been stacked one upon the other to form a single column.  Note the hole in the center of the column.  This helped secure the drum above it to itself—to prevent movement during construction and/or during earthquakes.

Note the plaster that was applied to the drum and then "fluted" to give the impression that the column was a whole—when in fact it was not!
