The Site

View looking east at the site of Jotapata (the barren hill/mound in the center of the image).    On the top of the mound several caves are visible.

It was here that one of the early battles of the First Jewish Revolt against the Romans took place.  After a 47-day siege, the Romans captured the city, and Josephus, the Jewish Historian, went over to the side of the Romans (War III: 141-408)!

Note the cluster of trees to the left of the center of the image; from there, the Romans built a ramp up to the summit of Jotapata as part of their attack on the city.
