Cave

Cave

One of the caves/sheepfolds on the citadel of Jotapata.

The Romans conquered Jotapata on 1 July after a forty-seven day siege.  At that time Josephus joined 40 others hiding in a concealed cave.  After a few days, the group submitted to the sword by the hands of others until only two persons were left—Josephus and one other. (War.3.8.1–9 [340-408]).

Josephus gave up to the Romans, prophesied that Vespasian would become emperor, and was taken into captivity.  Eventually he was released, given a pension, and wrote his works while living in Rome!

No one knows the exact cave that Josephus hid in, but this is a sample cave (now sheepfold) of many located at Jotapata!
