Virgin Mary

Virgin Mary

View looking at a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary at the XIII Station of the Cross.  This statue is called "Our Lady of Sorrows," and was a gift of a Portuguese queen in 1778.  The red "blood stain" visible on Mary's white garment reflects the memory of Simeon's words to Mary: "and a sword will pierce your own soul" (Luke 2:34-35).

Tradition maintains that this is the site where Jesus’ body was removed from the cross.

On the right is the mosaic depicting Jesus being nailed to the cross.
