Large Stone Vessels

Large Stone Vessels

A collection of large stone vessels that were discovered elite houses in Nahum Avigad's excavations in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem.

These stone jars were shaped on lathes from a single block, but their interiors were carved by hand.

They may have contained liquid for purification.  Compare the vessels mentioned at the wedding in Cana of Galilee that was attended by Jesus.

John 2:6     Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. (NIV)

But these jars hold considerably less than 20-30 gallons.

This object is displayed in the Israel Museum.
