Nahal Besor

Nahal Besor

View, looking west, of the Nahal Besor in the Western Negev Basin just to the north of Tell Jemmeh (T. Gamma; Yurza).  The Nahal (Hebrew)/Wadi (Arabic) is visible on the left (south) side of the image.  On the right (north) side of the image the typical "loess soil" of the Biblical Negev is visible.

When it rains, this windblown (aeolian) soil becomes relatively impermeable, so that instead of seeping into the ground much of the water rapidly runs off into the wadis, creating miniature “badland” formations.

This image was taken not too far from Gerar of Abraham and Isaac (Genesis 20; 26).
