North Church Baptismal Font

This is a picture of the cruciform baptismal font that is carved out of a single block of limestone.  Note the set of stairs that lead down into the basin.

Note also the hole in the wall just above the font.  There is a lead pipe in this hole.  Behind this wall (not visible) was a basin into which water was poured and which flowed through the pipe into the Baptismal Font.

The church was constructed in the fourth century AD and, following an earthquake, it was reconstructed at the beginning of the sixth century AD.
