View looking east along the axis of the basilica–style North Church.

Note the two steps that lead up from the central nave (in the foreground) to the chancel area of the church.  Originally there was a marble chancel screen that separated that more sacred area from the nave (where the congregation gathered).  To the left of center note the square platform in the nave.  This is the ambo from which sermons/homilies were delivered.

On the left (north) side of the image, between the two columns, a doorway is visible.  This led to a small room where the bones of a saint were deposited.  There is a similar one, not visible, on the south side of the apse.
