Tomb of Eurysaces

View looking north northwest at the tomb of Marcus Vergilius Eurysaces that was constructed around 30 B.C.—BEFORE the Porta Maggiore that is to the left of it.

The tomb is trapezoidal in shape and some of it is below the current surface.  The brick core is clad in white travertine stone.  Note the plain white vertical columns.  On top of them there are 9 mysterious circular openings.  Eurysaces was a baker, and these openings have been interpreted as representing openings in baking ovens or vats in which grain/flour was stored

Eurysaces was a freed slave who started a bakery and became very rich!
