Capitolium Interior

Capitolium Interior

View of the interior of the main sanctuary of Ostia, the Capitolium.  It is located on the west side of the Forum.  It was dedicated to the main Roman deities, namely the capitoline triad of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva.  It was constructed during the days of Hadrian (r. A.D. 117–138).

Note the niches on the wall that held statues.  The walls were made out of baked Roman bricks and covered with marble—note all the "pockmarks" on the far wall (left) left where the marble was fastened to the wall.
