Boxer

Boxer

An image of a "life-size" of a marble boxer from the theater at Aphrodisias.  The boxer has the hairstyle of a professional athlete and wears gloves with sheepskin sleeves.  The statue is signed, in Greek, by its maker: Polyneikes made (this).

The statue dates to the late third century AD.  The theater was converted into also serving as an arena in the second century AD, and boxing matches may have been held there as well as other events.

Compare the "gloves" of this well-preserved boxer in bronze.

There were many statues in ancient theaters, both of persons and of deities.
