Nereid Monument Lower Panels

View of the lower portion of the Nereid Tomb from Xanthos.

In particular note on the friezes below the columns, on the top is the depiction of the siege of a city and below this a battle scene of infantry and cavalry in combat.

It is believed that this is the tomb of Arbinas and his family—a prominent leader at Xanthos.  He died around 380 B.C.

The architectural fragments of this monument were removed during the "excavations" of Charles Fellows during 1842 and 1844 to the British Museum and this reconstruction dates to 1967–1969 (from signage at the British Museum).
