Theater (Interior)

Theater (Interior)

View from the stage (lower left) into the orchestra and the cavea of the small theater associated with the Asclepion. It could seat about 3,500 persons and was used for musical, theatrical, and oratory performances. Such pleasant activities were part of the "healing" process.

Note the altar on the far side of the semicircular orchestra. The theater was dedicated to Asclepius, Athena, and Hygieia. Above the altar note the V.I.P. seating (about eye level with the stage). Two of the staircases are visible — the theater was divided into five cunei.
