Relief of Demeter

Relief of Demeter

This relief of Demeter was found on the Demeter terrace of the acropolis. It dates to the Roman Period (first to fourth centuries A.D.). The deity Demeter is in the center of the relief. Note the torch she holds in her left hand, the altar (and flame), and the additional torch on her left side (right side of image).

To her right a sacrificial bull, standing on two blocks(!), is tethered and behind it is a large bundle of stalks of grain (Demeter is the goddess of grain).

This artifact is on display in the museum at Bergama (the modern city by Pergamum).
