Dionysus Temple Foundation Molding

Dionysus Temple Foundation Molding

View of the decorative molding of the western wall of the base of the Dionysus Temple.  Note the finely carved marble stones.  Compare the molding of the beautiful temple at Didyma (Turkey).

This temple was first built in the Hellenistic Period (ca. early second century B.C.).  It was later rebuilt and also dedicated to the Roman Emperor Caracalla (r. A.D. 211–217) under the name the "New Dionysus."
