Obelisk and Serpentine Column

View looking north.  In the foreground is the Serpentine Column that was brought to Constantinople as “booty” from the sacred precinct at Delphi, Greece.  It stood in the Temple of Apollo and had three intertwined heads (now missing).  It was dedicated in 479 B.C.

Beyond it (to the north) is the obelisk of the Egyptian Pharaoh Thutmose III (1504-1446 B.C.).  Constantine brought it to Constantinople from near Thebes in Egypt but Theodosius erected it in A.D. 390.  It is probably one third of its original height of 200 ft. [60 m.].
