Mosaic of Christ in Majesty

This mosaic is in a  “lunette” directly above the Imperial Gate .  It depicts Jesus Christ seated on a throne with his feet resting on a footstool.  In his left hand is an inscription “Peace be with you, I am the Light of the World.”  His right hand is raised in blessing.

Bowing at his feet is the Byzantine Emperor Leo VI (886–912).  In the roundel to his right (our left) is the head of the Virgin Mary and to his left (our right) is apparently an angel.
