Augustus Temple and Portico

View of the temple dedicated to Augustus — looking south. This temple was constructed to honor Augustus soon after his death in A.D. 14.

This temple was placed within a semicircular colonnade that surrounded its sides and back. In front of the temple, to the west, was a large open space that measured 200 x 280 ft. [63 x 85 m.].

The temple itself stood on the platform, visible in the center of the picture.

The worship of the emperor was embraced by most of his subjects but was problematic for Christians, who worshiped Jesus as God and Lord.
