Theater

View looking west southwest from the 9,000 seat theater at Sagalassos.  Note the almost complete circular area of the orchestra—just below the center of the image and the surrounding, greater–than–a–half-circle, cavea—indicating that the plan of the theater goes back to the Hellenistic Era.  However, the current form of the theater was built sometime between A.D. 180–200.  The stage area (skene) was only one story high.

Above the theater, and to the right, some of the remnants of an excavated residential area are visible and in the distance some of the mountains to the west of Sagalassos.

The theater has not been excavated nor restored—but to me, that just adds to the impressiveness of these well–preserved remains.  Because of the remoteness of Sagalassos, it was not heavily plundered for building materials.
