Temple of Serapis

Temple of Serapis

View looking northwest at the Temple of Serapis that is located on the grounds of the museum in Sinope.

In the foreground is foundation of the altar of the temple and in the upper right the foundation walls of the temple itself are visible.  Serapis is typically thought of as an Egyptian deity, but Plutarch says that Ptolemy, the Greek ruler of Egypt, stole the cult statue of Serapis from Sinope and brought it to Alexandria.

This temple complex was excavated in 1951 by Ekram Akurgal and L. Bludde.
