Wall & Tower

View looking northwest at a portion of the city wall of Sinope.  Sinope is situated on a peninsula that protrudes into the Black Sea but bends to the east—thus forming a sheltered southern side of the peninsula (where the harbor is).

This tower and wall guarded the narrow entrance point into the peninsula.  The walls probably date back to the 4th century B.C. and were frequently refurbished.  They are 1.3 mi. (2 km.) long and over 80 ft. (25 m.) tall.  There are numerous towers and seven gates.
