Pheidias’ Workshop

Pheidias’ Workshop

View looking south southeast at the northwestern corner of the workshop of Pheidias.  This structure was later turned into a church.

Pheidias (500-425 B.C.) was an Athenian painter and sculptor.  He made the famous statue of Athena for the Parthenon in Athens.  He then moved (actually fled – he was accused of stealing!) to Olympia where he made the great (one of the seven wonders of the ancient world!!) gold and ivory (chryselephantine) statue of Zeus.  It took him 10 years to complete and it was 44 ft. [13.5 m.] tall.

His workshop had to be as large as the Temple of Zeus in order to construct the huge statue.
