Peirene Fountain 2

Peirene Fountain 2

View looking southeast at the rectangular pool of the Peirene Fountain. This had been lined with marble. The two standing columns, just left of center of the image, are the remnants of what had been a portico that surrounded the pool.

This water complex was the major source of water for Corinth. On the rear of the image six arched openings are visible. This façade had been faced with marble in antiquity. Behind these openings (not visible) is the area where water, transported from outside the city, was collected.
