Asclepion 2

View looking west at the area where the temple and altar of Asclepius were located.  This area is now under reconstruction and the current arrangement of stones has more to do with the reconstruction than the actual outline of the temple and altar.

The cult of Asclepius, the god of healing, was established in Athens in the late fifth century B.C. – possibly after the city had been devastated by a plague.  The cult may have been introduced by practitioners from Epidarus.
