Stoa of Attalus Interior

Stoa of Attalus Interior

View of the interior of the western portico of the Stoa of Attalus.  On the left (west) side of the image the Doric columns facing the agora are just visible.  The interior Ionic columns are clearly visible and to the right of them are the reconstructed rooms of the stoa - note the door openings.  This enclosed area houses the Agora Museum.

The reconstructed Stoa of Attalus was dedicated in 1956 and the lower floor houses a wonderful museum, while the upper floor serves as the headquarters for the American School of Archaeology in Athens — the organization that has been excavating the agora since the 1930’s.
