Capernaum Synagogue Foundation

Capernaum Synagogue Foundation

Looking north along the western wall of the synagogue. Note the pilasters (partial columns) attached to the wall.  The white outer west wall of the fourth (but more probably fifth/sixth) century synagogue is clearly visible.

Underneath the upper white synagogue, is the black basalt foundation of an earlier building.   This lower structure was similar in size but was built on a slightly different orientation. The excavators believe that this is the black basalt foundation of the synagogue that existed in Capernaum in the days of Jesus.
