View along the northwestern wall of the Herodian Enclosure of the Tomb of the Patriarchs.

Note the projecting "pilasters"that alternated with recessed areas. Note too the sloping stones which help the transition between the flat lower surface and the more interesting upper portion of the wall. This type of wall was used by Herod in the construction of the Temple Platform (Haram esh-Sharif) in Jerusalem – but the BEST example of this type of construction is found here in Hebron.

A careful look will reveal the delicate margins on the edge of each stone.
