View looking down into one of the chambers of the “Basement Building.”  This structure is located on the west side of the tel.  It is called the “basement building” because when it was excavated no series of floors were found on the way down.

In this image, one of the “rooms” of the basement building is seen.  I would guess that the walls are still standing to a height of 10 ft. [3 m.].

It seems that a large “hole” was dug here and the substructure (basement) of a large building was put in the “hole.”  Yohanan Aharoni, the excavator of Tel Sheva, believed that a series of temples once stood here, but that during the religious reforms of the Judean king Hezekiah (715–686 B.C.) that they were destroyed, uprooted, and this “secular” building was constructed in the spot where they had stood.
