View looking north at the remnants of the Outer and the Inner Harbors of Alexandria Troas.  The Inner Harbor is on the right (east) with water in it.  To the left (west) there are patches of water in the outer harbor.   The Aegean Sea is in the distance on the left (west).  The building in the picture is the old excavation house.

At Alexandria Troas boats would wait for favorable winds before beginning their difficult journey clockwise and northeastwards up through the Dardanelles (ancient Hellespont) — through which the current flows in the opposite direction — from northeast to southwest!

At one time Constantine thought of making Alexandria Troas his capital instead of Byzantium (modern Istanbul).
