View looking southwest down into the orchestra area of the Roman Theater at Phaselis.  The cavea (seating area) of this theater is built into the western side of the acropolis and borders one of the main streets that passes through Phaselis.

The stage area (skene) on the left (west) side of the image is quite well–preserved.

Note especially the three (of four) lower doorways (completely preserved) on the lower portion of the stage area.  Animals would enter the “orchestra area” for wild–beast fights through these doors.  Note too the moderately high wall surrounding the orchestra area that protected the spectators from these animals.
