Wadi es–Sir and Caves

Wadi es–Sir and Caves

A number of caves are located north of the Qasr al–Abd that are to be associated with the Tobiads.

These caves are carved into the cliffs on two levels and on the lower level two of the caves have the name “Tobiah” carved next to the entrance.  Josephus suggests that the entrance to the caves was narrow so that they could be easily defended.  In fact some of the caves may have been used as receptions rooms for guests rather than as “hide outs.”

One of the caves was actually used as a stable for 120 horses!
