View of a cistern from the site of Ashkelon that is located along the Mediterranean coast of Israel. Half of the cistern has fallen away leaving half of it visible.
The side of the cistern had been plaster so that it would not leak water. Note at the top of it, half of the circular opening is preserved. Buckets or bags were lowered through this opening to draw the water from the cistern.
