Tholos

View looking down on to one of the most famous buildings at Delphi — the “Tholos” or round structure.  Three steps led up to the building and it was surrounded by a peristyle of twenty Doric columns—three of them, and a section of the frieze have been restored.

In the interior Corinthian columns stood in a circle on a raised stylobate.  The building was constructed in the fourth century B.C.  Unfortunately its function is not known!

To the left of the building the rectangular–shaped foundations of the Massalian Treasury are visible.  This building, and its ancient contents, was donated by the city of Massalia, modern Marseilles in the sixth century B.C.
