Latrine 1

View looking down into the remains of the public latrine at Philippi. Note the stone seats along the walls with the openings in them. Many of the originally 50 "seats" of this latrine are still preserved. Under the seats water ran in a trough to carry away the waste. In front of the seats note the groove in the floor. It has been suggested that water ran in the groove and that a "sponge on a stick" was washed there — the "sponge on a stick" was used in place of toilet paper in Roman times.
