Refectory

A Photograph of the interior of the Refectory (dining hall) of the Monastery of Saint John.  This is where the monks used to have their meals together during their period of communal living.  It was one of the first buildings of the monastery to be built and was completed in 1091!  It is a rectangular structure. Note the original long marble tables where the monks would eat.  The red-clothed tables are for modern dining.

There is a long thin wooden board that is suspended horizontally in the upper left of the image.  This is a Simandron, or nakos, and was struck to call the monks to dinner.
