Cavea East

View looking east, down into the cavea of the Theater at Epidaurus.  Notice how the cavea extends more than 180 degrees.  This “larger than a semi-circle” design is characteristic of Greek, rather than Roman, theaters.  Compare the theater at Priene.

To the left of center, notice the double doorway parodos through while people would enter the theater.  Also noticeable in the cavea is the diazoma (belt) that separates the upper from the lower seating area.
