Copper Scroll

This is a view of 9 portions of the “Copper Scroll” (3Q15) that was discovered in cave 3 near Qumran.  It was the only scroll that was engraved on copper (most were written on papyrus or parchment).  This particular scroll describes 64 places in Palestine where portions of the treasure of the Jerusalem temple were hidden prior to the temple's destruction by the Romans in A.D. 70.

Because it was of copper it was not unrolled, but it was actually carefully cut into pieces, that are visible in this image, so that it could be read.

This artifact is housed in the small but important museum on the Citadel in the middle of Amman, Jordan.
