View looking northeast a model of Herod's Palace in Jerusalem—it was located just south of the current Jaffa Gate.
Note the red tile roofing, the three storeys, the three openings (compluvium), in the roof to let air, sunlight, and rainfall into various courtyards, etc. This reconstruction is based upon the description of Josephus and analogies from very elite structures in the contemporary Roman world.
This building had a "twin" at the other (south) end of the central courtyard.
