Intrusive Pit

View of one of Van Beek's balks soon after excavation.  Notice how smooth the vertical surface of the balk is and he has actually labeled, with white tags, the various strata.  Notice too, that mud–brick, from the local loess soil, was the exclusive building material—stone was not readily available here in the southern Philistine Plain/Western Negev.

Notice also at least one very well defined pit that was cut into previous layers (strata)—this is a great teaching example!

Unfortunately the protective sheet–metal roof was ripped off, by winds, and this balk has been destroyed by rain.
