Dionysus

Dionysus

View of a copy of a statue of Dionysus in the niche in the back outside wall of the Temple of Isis.  Dionysus was identified with the Egyptian god Osiris—the husband of Isis.

Dionysus is pouring wine into the mouth of the panther next to his feet.  The inscription engraved on the base of the statue says that the figure was a gift from Numerio Popidio Ampliato, the father of Popido Celsino, who restored the Temple of Isis with his own money.  See also the Latin Inscription above the entrance to the complex.

The original statue is on display in the Naples Archaeological Museum.
