Herod’s Gate

Herod’s Gate is located in the north wall of the Old City of Jerusalem—east of the Damascus Gate.  View looking southeast at the current (west) entrance to the gate.  Originally it was entered from the east.

In Arabic it is called “Bab ez-Zahr, “the Flowered Gate.”  It received the name “Herod’s Gate” in the sixteenth or seventeenth century when pilgrims believed that the palace of Herod Antipas—ruler of Galilee and Perea during the days of Jesus—was located inside of it.

Today it leads directly into the Muslim Quarter in the northeastern portion of the Old City.
