This ladder is located on a ledge just above the entrance to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. It was placed there over a hundred years ago to bring food to Armenian monks who were locked in the church. It has not been moved since - for the various communities are at odds over who has the right to move such objects.
Indeed the Greek Orthodox, Armenians, Roman Catholics, Syrians, Copts, and Ethiopians all have their designated areas based upon the "status quo" as defined in 1852!
