The Temple Complex

The golden door in the foreground was the “Golden Gate” that led into the Court of Women.  From there a semi–circular staircase led up to and into the Court of Israel.

Note the “balustrade” that surrounds the whole.  On this balustrade, about 5 ft. [m.] high, were a series of inscriptions in Latin and Greek that forbade Gentiles from entering into the more sacred areas of the Temple.  Paul was accused of bringing a Gentile across this barrier (Acts 21:27–29).

Note also the portico in the background—this was the western boundary of the Court of the Gentiles.
