View looking east down on to the north end of Herod’s Palace complex.
On the left (north) side of the image are three towers. These were named Mariamne (the most beautiful tower, named after his favorite wife—whom he murdered!), Hippicus (after a friend), and Phasael (his brother who committed suicide). The foundation of one of these is still standing—but it is unknown which one it is.
On the lower right side of the image one of the buildings of the Herodian Palace complex is represented—red tiled roof and all!
The wall that is visible in the lower portion of the image is the western part of the first wall—lower portions of which still exist.
