Warren's Gate

Warren

Inside the Rabbinic Tunnel, at "Warren's Gate." The tunnel on the right side of the image proceeds south (normally traffic in the tunnel progresses from south to north, that is from right to left in this photo). The rough stones and fill on the center and left side of the image, block what is known as "Warren's Gate." It is named after a famous nineteenth century Jerusalem explorer. Behind this blockage is where in the middle ages, a synagogue, called "the Cave," was located - underneath the Temple Mount area. Today, this underground space is used as a cistern. Proceeding north, to the left, one comes to the spot which is thought to be due west of where the Holy of Holies of the Temple was located - click here.
