Capital

Capital

A wonderful well–preserved capital that was found in one of the elite houses in Nahum Avigad's excavations in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem.

It is called a Corinthian capital, but it lacks the typical acanthus leaves.  Note the scrolls on the top, the well–carved lily design, and the leaves at the bottom.  These bottom leaves are reminiscent of a "Pergamene Capital."

This object is displayed in the Israel Museum.
