City of David

City of David

View looking north at the City of David (= the old ancient core of Jerusalem).

On the left side of the image and above center is the "Golden" Dome of the Dome of the Rock. South of this, closer to the center is the "Silver" dome of the el-Aqsa Mosque (now black). Below the el-Aqsa Mosque is the southern wall of the Old City of Jerusalem. Sloping down, in the direction of the viewer is a long sunlit area surrounded by shadows. This sunlit area is basically the Old Ancient Core of Jerusalem – the city that David Captured.

The shaded area to the left of it, with a barely visible asphalt road, is where the "Central Valley" of Jerusalem was located, and to the left of that the "Western Hill" rises up into the left side of the picture.

To the right (east) of the Old Ancient Core – about in the center of the picture – is a shaded area: this depression is the Kidron Valley. It flows from the north toward the viewer, and leaves the image on the lower right corner as it flows down to the Dead Sea. The buildings rising to the right of the Kidron – in the sunlight – are part of the Silwan neighborhood of Jerusalem.

On the horizon, from right (east) to left (north) is the tower of the Hebrew University, Hadassah Hospital, and on the horizon left of center (north) is the French Hill neighborhood of Jerusalem.
