Weil Excavation (Tombs?)

Weil Excavation (Tombs?)

View looking north at the area in the City of David excavated by Raymond Weill 1913-1914. This area is located about 460 ft. [140 m.] northeast of the pool of Siloam.

The opening on the left is about 52 ft. [16 m] long and 8 ft. [2.4 m] wide and ends in the back with a platform (not visible) which could have held a body or a sarcophagus.

First Kings 2:10 states "Then David rested with his father and was buried in the City of David." Some have suggested that the tunnel on the left was in fact the tomb of David – but this view is not accepted by many. The problem is that subsequent quarrying in the area, during the Roman and later times, has greatly disturbed the area.

The "tunnel" on the right side of the image is much smaller in size.
