View of the interior of the largest room (family room) in a reconstructed house. The floor consists of unhewn basalt stones. The recently built hanging shelf is a place where foodstuffs were stored — away from rodents.

In the lower left portion of the image is a long bench where the wall meets the floor. This bench is covered with a white animal skin. Rolled-up sleeping mats would have been stored on this bench during daylight hours.

This view is how the room would have looked during daylight hours when family activities were underway. At bedtime, the mats were taken off the bench and placed on the floor where the family members slept. The viewer is invited to imagine what sleeping conditions would have been like with fifteen family members all sleeping in this room: grandma and grandpa, mother and father, married children and spouses, smaller children, and crying infants.
